Commissioner Virginia Bell has announced a four-day delay in handing down her final report into antisemitism and social cohesion. The report, originally due on 14 December 2027, will now be submitted on Friday, 18 December.
This adjustment is intended to avoid distracting from commemorations marking the first anniversary of the Bondi terror attack, which occurred on 14 December 2025. Commissioner Bell noted concerns within the Jewish community that releasing the report on the anniversary would be a distraction.
On the final day of public hearings, Commissioner Bell resisted calls to extend the commission's work, including from Jewish community leaders and parliamentarians. She stated that the commission had worked to address its terms of reference within the established timetable, noting that the implementation of important policy proposals is awaiting the commission's recommendations.
The Bondi terror attack saw two gunmen open fire on Jewish Australians celebrating Chanukah at Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 fatalities. Significant portions of the inquiry have taken place in camera due to ongoing criminal prosecution and national security sensitivities.
