Music fans across the UK turned to eclipse-themed tracks during Wednesday's solar eclipse, with new data from Spotify showing a massive spike in streams for several songs. Bonnie Tyler's classic 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' saw a 94 per cent rise in UK streams, five weeks after the singer's death on July 8.
The partial solar eclipse, which obscured around 91 per cent of the sun between approximately 6pm and 8:15pm, was the most significant over UK skies since 1999. Listening data compared streams on August 12 to the daily average between August 1 and 11.
Other tracks also experienced notable surges. Evolfo's 'Moon Eclipsed The Sun' shot up by 12,817 per cent in the UK, while Chris Staples' 'Dark Side Of The Moon' rose by 2,805 per cent. Pink Floyd's 1973 track 'Eclipse' saw a 594 per cent increase in UK streams, and Delta Goodrem's 'Eclipse' rose by 104 per cent. Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine' also saw a 17 per cent spike.
Mal Pope, a friend of the late Bonnie Tyler, suggested she would have been pleased to see her song widely played, noting her belief that people would continue to play it during eclipses for generations.
