The sentences of three teenage boys who were spared custody over the rape of two girls will be reviewed at the Court of Appeal in July.

A third boy, now aged 14, was also convicted at Southampton Crown Court for his involvement in the second attack and an indecent images offence.

The Attorney General, Lord Hermer, referred the sentences to the Court of Appeal under the unduly lenient scheme, citing the 'epidemic of violence against women and girls in this country'.

The case involves the rape of two girls, aged 14 and 15, by three 15-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy, who filmed the assaults and shared video footage on social media.

The victims displayed immense bravery in coming forward, with one statement describing suffering 'flashbacks' and feeling 'their hands on me'.

Why this matters: This decision highlights the need for robust sentencing for serious crimes, particularly those involving violence against women and girls.

What this means for you: What this means for you: This case highlights the importance of taking action against perpetrators of violence and ensuring that sentences reflect the severity of the crimes committed.
