BP has named Ian Tyler as its permanent chair, concluding a search that began after the contentious removal of Albert Manifold. Tyler, who has been interim chair and a non-executive director on the BP board since April 2025, assumes the role immediately.
The appointment follows Manifold's removal in late May after only eight months in the position. BP cited concerns regarding governance oversight and conduct for his departure.
Amanda Blanc, BP’s senior independent director who led the search for the new chair, announced her intention to step down at next year’s annual meeting. She had previously led the process that appointed Manifold to replace Helge Lund.
Tyler, a former chief executive of Balfour Beatty, currently chairs Grafton Group and is a senior independent director of Anglo American. He is tasked with overseeing a strategic shift at BP to refocus on fossil fuel extraction and move away from renewable energy investments.
