The film 'Brassed Off', released three decades ago, is being celebrated with a special live performance. The Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the group that inspired the film, is set to perform music alongside a screening at the Royal Albert Hall.
Mark Herman, the film's writer, reflected on its success, stating he initially thought it might only be popular "within a 10 mile radius of Barnsley for about two weeks." He believes the film's enduring appeal stems from its universal theme of being downtrodden, rather than solely focusing on a brass band.
Herman also noted that the film, which addresses the destruction of the mining industry, is one of Prime Minister Andy Burnham's favourite films. Despite its success, Herman expressed pessimism about the current British film industry, suggesting that similar mid-budget films like 'Brassed Off' would likely not be made today.
