Brazilian Rafael Camara is set to make his Formula 1 debut in 2027, joining the US-based Haas team. The 21-year-old, who is currently leading the Formula 2 championship, was selected after a rigorous assessment process.
Camara was chosen over reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and Haas reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa. All drivers, except Doohan, were assessed at a test at Portugal's Portimao track in August using previous years' F1 cars.
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu expressed excitement about signing Camara, noting his ability to handle the car well with limited learning time and his impressive raw speed. Camara, a member of the Ferrari driver academy, thanked Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for their trust.
While Haas has not yet confirmed who will race their other car next season, Briton Oliver Bearman is expected to be confirmed for a third season. Frenchman Esteban Ocon will depart the team at the end of this year after two seasons alongside Bearman, as confirmed by Haas last month.
