Teenage striker Brian Madjo made an immediate impact for Aston Villa, scoring his first goal 45 minutes into his debut against Paris Saint-Germain. The 17-year-old's appearance followed confirmation that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) had upheld Villa’s appeal to register him.
Madjo, who was signed for £10m from Metz, had endured an eight-month wait to play competitively due to FIFA regulations concerning the transfer of an “international minor.” Villa captain John McGinn commented on Madjo's difficult year, stating, “A player born in England should be able to play in England. He has the potential to be an unbelievable striker and he showed that.”
The 6ft 4in striker's goal saw him break Patrick Kluivert’s 30-year record as the Super Cup’s youngest goalscorer. Defender Tyrone Mings praised Madjo's character and potential, noting, “He has got a very high ceiling. He is very, very difficult to play against and I just hope that his goal fills him with confidence.”
Madjo departed the pitch to a standing ovation after 72 minutes, having registered 27 touches and six shots. Villa will now prepare for their final friendly against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday before starting their league campaign at Brighton a week on Sunday.
