Brian May offers solar eclipse viewing advice as partial eclipse visible in UK

Astrophysicist and Queen guitarist Brian May has shared advice for viewing the solar eclipse, which will be partially visible in the UK this evening from 6:30pm BST.

  • A partial solar eclipse will be visible in the UK from 6:30pm BST.
  • Brian May, a qualified astrophysicist, has advised against looking directly at the sun or using telescopes/binoculars pointed at it.
  • May suggested creating a pinhole projector using cardboard to safely view the eclipse.

Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May has provided guidance on safely observing the solar eclipse occurring tonight, August 12. The UK is expected to experience a partial eclipse from 6:30pm BST, while much of Europe will see a total eclipse.

May, who earned his PhD in astrophysics in 2007, has been posting regular updates and advice on his Instagram page. He cautioned against looking directly at the sun and warned against using telescopes or binoculars aimed at it.

For safe viewing, May recommended creating a pinhole projector. This involves making a small hole in a piece of cardboard and projecting an image of the sun onto a white card.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight, May described a total eclipse as a "life changing experience," noting its unique ability to make one feel aware of their position in space. He also mentioned his hope of seeing a total eclipse in Spain, despite concerns about cloud cover.

What this means for you: You can safely view the partial solar eclipse this evening by following Brian May's advice to use a pinhole projector, avoiding direct sun observation or using optical aids pointed at the sun.
