Passengers intending to travel on the Brighton Main Line during January have been urged by Network Rail to plan their journeys in advance due to essential engineering works. The disruptions are scheduled for three weekends next month, specifically the 6th-7th, 13th-14th, and 20th-21st January, affecting services between Brighton and Three Bridges.
During these periods, no trains will operate between Brighton and Three Bridges. Instead, replacement bus services will be in place to transport passengers. These bus services are expected to significantly extend journey times, and travellers are advised to factor in considerable extra time for their journeys. Network Rail has emphasised the importance of checking online journey planners, such as the National Rail Enquiries website, before setting off.
The planned works form part of a multi-million-pound investment programme aimed at enhancing the reliability and resilience of the railway infrastructure. Key aspects of the work include track renewals, signal upgrades, and bridge maintenance. These improvements are designed to reduce future delays and ensure a smoother, more dependable service for the thousands of commuters and leisure travellers who use the line regularly.
While acknowledging the inconvenience to passengers, Network Rail has stated that undertaking these works during weekends in January, a typically quieter period for rail travel, helps to minimise the overall impact. They also highlighted that carrying out such extensive work requires temporary closures to ensure the safety of both workers and the public.
Train operators, including Southern and Thameslink, will be communicating specific service changes and alternative travel arrangements to their customers. Passengers are encouraged to consult their respective operator's websites for the most up-to-date information regarding timetables and bus replacement schedules. The completion of these works is anticipated to contribute to a more robust railway network for the South East.
