Brighton delivered a stunning 5-0 thrashing to Crystal Palace today, marking their first victory against their arch-rivals since February 2024. The win, which included a breathtaking halfway-line goal from Diego Gómez, ended a four-match winless streak against Palace.
The Seagulls started with immense intensity, finding themselves 3-0 up within the first 10 minutes. An own goal from Jaydee Canvot opened the scoring, followed by Gómez's spectacular strike and a goal from Yasin Ayari.
Gómez's wondergoal, struck from 51 metres, was a highlight, marking the furthest Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney's 58-metre effort in November 2017. Charalampos Kostoulas added a fourth after half-time, and substitute Jack Hinshelwood completed the rout with a late strike, matching Brighton's record 5-0 win over Palace from 1956.
The result sees Brighton, currently the Premier League's top scorers, continue their strong start to the season under Fabian Hürzeler. For Palace manager Pierre Sage, the defeat raises concerns, with suggestions of disagreements behind the scenes since he took over in the summer.
