A 28-year-old British man has died after falling an estimated 61 metres (200ft) while descending a mountain in northern Spain. Local law enforcement reported that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.
The mountaineer fell down a vertical gully on the east side of Torrecerredo, which is the highest peak of the Cantabrian mountains. The Spanish Civil Guard for the Asturias region confirmed the details.
A rescue team located the mountaineer's remains using a helicopter. Two specialists were then lowered to retrieve the body and belongings, which had been scattered during the fall. The incident took place about 20 metres below the Torrecerredo peak.
The body was transported to La Morgal, a regional sports and aviation facility near Gijon. The UK Foreign Office has stated it has contacted local authorities regarding the death.
