A British couple, Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, and their Greek pilot were killed in a helicopter crash on the island of Sifnos on Monday, Greek police have confirmed. The couple were reportedly on their honeymoon, according to newspaper Kathimerini.
The private helicopter crashed just metres from a landing pad, killing all three on board. The couple had reportedly taken the helicopter from Markopoulo, near Athens, to the popular holiday island.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident. A senior police official told The Times that the crash occurred just before the helicopter's scheduled landing time of 18:15 local time (16:15 GMT).
Sifnos' Deputy Mayor, Manolis Foundoulakis, who arrived at the scene, told local news site Newsit that there was almost "nothing left" of the aircraft. Locals reportedly described a "bizarre engine noise coming from the aircraft" as it was about to land. Firefighters extinguished a blaze that broke out after the crash by Monday evening.
