Greek police believe a mechanical fault may have caused a helicopter crash on the island of Sifnos, killing a British couple on honeymoon and the pilot. The incident occurred moments before the aircraft was due to land.
Marie Ebert, 30, and Alexander Cromie, 31, from London, were identified as the passengers who died on Monday evening. The pilot was named as Giorgos Raikos, 53, described by officials as an "extremely experienced" former air force officer.
Authorities are focusing on a "strange noise" the privately chartered Bell 206 helicopter is reported to have made before it fell to the ground and exploded on impact. The deputy mayor of Sifnos, Manolis Fountolakis, stated that people in the area testified hearing a strange noise and seeing the propeller doing "something strange".
CCTV footage showing the aircraft spiralling out of control as it approached the island's helipad near the village of Exambela is also being examined. Greece's ministry of infrastructure and transport is coordinating the inquiry.
