A British family is pleading with French authorities to release the body of Jasmeet Wadhwa, 32, who died in the Channel in April. His body has been held by officials for five months.
Mr Wadhwa died on 1 April while attempting to reach the UK on a dinghy with his mother, Harbans Kaur Wadhwa. They had fled Taliban persecution in Afghanistan in January.
Relatives of Mr Wadhwa, including his cousin Ivnit Singh Wadwa, travelled from the UK to France to participate in a demonstration on Monday outside the courthouse in Dunkirk. They were protesting against the French authorities' refusal to release the bodies of Mr Wadhwa and Nagmeldin Adam, 33, who died on the same boat.
Harbans Kaur Wadhwa, who was rescued from the dinghy, applied to the Home Office to come to the UK legally under the "one in, one out" scheme. However, the Home Office rejected her application, citing an unsatisfactory identity document.
