Democrat Annie Andrews to contest South Carolina Senate seat in November

Democrat Annie Andrews will face Darline Graham in the South Carolina Senate election in November, following the death of Senator Lindsey Graham.

  • Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, is running as the Democratic candidate for the US Senate in South Carolina.
  • Darline Graham has been selected as the new Republican candidate for the South Carolina Senate seat.
  • The election is scheduled for November and is considered likely to remain Republican.

Democrat Annie Andrews will compete against Republican Darline Graham in the South Carolina Senate election this November. This follows the unexpected death of Senator Lindsey Graham, whose sister, Darline, was selected as the new Republican candidate last week after Donald Trump's persuasion of South Carolina voters.

Andrews, a pediatrician for 20 years, has centred her campaign on public health and science, emphasising the importance of vaccines amid measles outbreaks in South Carolina. The election in the conservative state is still heavily favoured to remain in Republican hands.

Andrews is backed by 314 Action, a political action fund dedicated to electing scientists and doctors. The group reached its initial fundraising target of $25 million in August, aiming to elect at least 100 doctors to state and federal office by 2030.

Why this matters: The election is a closely watched race for a US Senate seat, with health and science issues being prominent in the campaign.
