British High Commissioner to Solomon Islands and Naoero, Paul Turner, has called for greater participation of women in the Solomon Islands' democratic processes. Speaking at a Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) seminar in Honiara, Mr Turner stated that democracy's strength is directly linked to its diversity.
The WFD event, which focused on increasing women's engagement in Parliament, is part of a series of events marking International Day of Democracy. Since 2022, WFD has been working in the Solomon Islands to strengthen the National Parliament's committee system and enhance budget oversight.
A three-day workshop, involving MPs, women's rights groups, youth groups, parliamentary staff, and the media, is currently running. Its aim is to identify obstacles to women's political participation in the Solomon Islands and to propose measures to address them, including forming new coalitions.
