The state of Britain's roads has reached a boiling point, with 70% of UK drivers feeling angry or frustrated when behind the wheel, according to a damning new survey by the RAC. This is up from 55% last year, highlighting the escalating problem that is having a profound impact on road users across the country.
The main culprits for driver discontent are potholes, prolonged roadworks and inadequate maintenance, with over 1,500 drivers polled in the RAC's research. President Mike Fenton-Kerr described the results as 'extremely worrying', adding: 'It's a reflection of the poor state of our roads and the lack of investment in their upkeep.'
Opposition Labour Party figures have seized on the report to criticise the government, with shadow transport secretary Louise Haigh saying: 'The Tories' failure to act on this issue is staggering. A decade in power and still we're left with crumbling roads – it's time for a change.'
The RAC has now called on the government to increase investment in road maintenance and prioritise repairs, while also urging drivers to report defects and support their 'Fix Our Roads' campaign.
