Bubista, the highly-regarded manager who steered Cape Verde to a remarkable World Cup debut last month, has been appointed manager of Morocco's Renaissance Berkane. The club announced the appointment on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.
While contract details were not immediately available, media reports suggest the 56-year-old is expected to resign from his Cape Verde national team position within days. Bubista, whose real name is Pedro Leitao Brito, was named African Coach of the Year in 2025 after guiding Cape Verde to their historic World Cup qualification.
At the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, his team achieved draws against Spain and Uruguay. Their journey concluded with a narrow extra-time defeat by eventual finalists Argentina in the round of 32.
Renaissance Berkane, a strong presence in Moroccan football, won the league title in 2025 and finished as runners-up this year. They also reached the semi-finals of the African Champions League last season and are set to compete in the continent's premier club competition again.
Bubista is not the only Cape Verde star on the move. Goalkeeper Vozinha, real name Josimar José Évora Dias, has signed with Chilean club Colo-Colo. He is currently seeking permission to use his nickname on his shirt, as Chilean league rules typically require surnames and prohibit nicknames.
