Andy Burnham's recent intervention in the Manchester City debate has reportedly reignited tensions between the Premier League and the Prime Minister. Government officials are understood to be unhappy about not receiving prior notice of the independent commission's judgment, which detailed £900m of financial manipulation and "sham contracts" by Manchester City.
Burnham, in interviews on Wednesday, expressed that he would be "really concerned" if City's owners were compelled to sell the club following the guilty verdict for more than 100 breaches of financial rules. He also acknowledged that he could not intervene further in the ongoing process, which is subject to appeal.
The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) is monitoring the Manchester City case. The IFR has powers to assess the suitability of owners, directors, and executives to protect the "honesty and integrity of English football where there is clear evidence of wrongdoing by individuals."
Burnham also reiterated his past criticisms of the Premier League's handling of his former club, Everton, regarding their financial rule breaches. He previously accused the league of an "abuse of process" in 2023.
