Chloe Mefford is calling for a change in the law after her partner, Tommy Hunter, died in December 2023. Mr Hunter was hit by a car on Burton Road near Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire and his body was found over 24 hours later in a roadside hedge.
The man investigated by police, Brandon Beesla, 29, stated he did not stop because he believed he had hit a badger. Mr Beesla admitted driving a Pontiac Firebird in a condition likely to cause danger of injury on the night of the incident. He was fined £2,000 and received a 12-month driving ban.
Ms Mefford believes Mr Hunter would have been found sooner if drivers were legally required to stop and report all accidents immediately. Currently, drivers must report accidents involving certain animals, but not wild animals like badgers.
Samantha Niblett, Labour MP for South Derbyshire, has written to the government in support of Mr Hunter's family. She stated that drivers should be legally required to stop, check for casualties, and contact emergency services without delay. A Department of Transport spokesperson said they are considering responses to a consultation on strengthening penalties for failing to report collisions.
