Campaigners have warned that a proposed 101-acre data centre in Gwynedd would have a "heartbreaking" effect on the landscape and wildlife. The Canolfan Ddata Menai plans, located between Caernarfon and Y Felinheli, are currently open for public consultation until 17 October.
Developers behind the project state it could create over 900 jobs during construction and a further 200 permanent roles. They also claim the centre would "transform and revitalise the long-derelict" site, addressing contamination and safety issues.
However, nearly 15,000 people have signed a petition opposing the plans. Concerns raised by campaigners include the development's size, potential noise pollution affecting people within a 2.5-mile (4km) radius, and its visual impact, with the highest buildings standing at 30m (98ft).
Campaigners also highlighted worries about water usage, with the centre potentially using around 700,000 litres a day on average, and up to 12 million litres a day at its maximum. Developers have stated that no water would be taken from the Menai Strait and no warm cooling water discharged into it.
