Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed a proposal from the European Union for Canada to become the bloc's first 'associate member'. This comes despite threats from US President Donald Trump, who stated Washington could impose 'very serious tariffs' or halt trade if the EU proceeds with the plan.
In a speech to the European Parliament, Mr Carney called for 'deep cooperation' and cited polling indicating that the majority of Canadians support closer ties with Europe.
