Canadian boxer George Chuvalo, a five-time national heavyweight champion, has died at the age of 89. Chuvalo, who was born in 1937, died on Saturday, his birthday, according to Sully's Boxing Gym in Toronto where he trained.
Throughout his 93 professional fights, which included 73 victories, 18 losses, and two draws, Chuvalo was never once knocked down. He fought Muhammad Ali twice, in 1966 and 1972, and Ali reportedly called him the toughest opponent he ever faced.
After retiring from professional boxing in 1978, Chuvalo became a public speaker, advocating for anti-drug education and mental health awareness. He had previously stated that he lost three sons and his wife to drug overdoses and suicide.
