Cape Town in South Africa has been identified as the best-value winter sun destination for UK travellers, according to a new report from Post Office Travel Money. Tokyo in Japan and Mombasa in Kenya were also highlighted for offering good value.
The evaluation, which assessed 24 popular holiday spots, found that Cape Town offered the lowest prices for typical tourist goods. The Winter Sun Holiday Costs Barometer calculates affordability based on items such as an evening meal, beverages, insect repellent, and sun lotion, but does not include flight or accommodation costs.
Prices in Cape Town have reportedly decreased by 9.7 per cent since March. A three-course evening meal for two, including a bottle of house wine, was found to cost £39.26 in Cape Town. This compares to £42.78 in Mombasa and £48.50 in Tokyo.
Among European resorts, the Algarve in Portugal, Costa del Sol in Spain, and Tenerife in the Canary Islands were the cheapest. Four Asian destinations, including Penang, Phuket, Colombo, and Tokyo, were among the overall top ten cheapest destinations.
