Chess fans are gearing up for at least two encounters between world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and world championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov. The two will compete in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, a six-team franchise competition inspired by cricket's Indian Premier League.
This year, the Global Chess League returns to Bengaluru, India, running from 5-13 September. Carlsen will represent the defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers, while Sindarov will play for Fyers American Gambits. Their initial clashes will be 20-minute Rapid games, with potential for further matches if their teams advance to later stages.
In other chess news, England is on track for success in the European Senior Team Championships in Hersonissos, Crete. The nation is set to secure at least silver medals in both the over-50s and over-65s categories, having already claimed gold in the women's competition.
