Between 2019 and 2025, the number of matches finishing in under 200 overs tripled. Last year, 39 games played to a result lasted an average of 272.1 overs, which is just over three days.
This trend contributes to a broader sense of unease regarding the future of Test cricket, despite exciting performances and results in recent years. The global game is experiencing rapid changes, with short-form franchise leagues becoming a primary ambition for professional cricketers.
The current Future Tours Programme is set to conclude next summer, and the subsequent programme, yet to be announced, is expected to lean towards one-off Test matches. This development suggests a continued evolution in the structure of international cricket.
