Long-time viewers of the BBC medical drama Casualty were treated to a nostalgic surprise during the show's 40th anniversary two-part special. The episodes not only saw the return of familiar faces but also brought back the original theme tune and opening credits.

Derek Thompson, who played Charlie Fairhead for 38 years, and George Rainsford, who portrayed Ethan Hardy, reprised their roles. Their characters assisted following an explosion at a neighbouring hospital in the action-packed instalments.

Thompson, 78, left the series in 2024 after starring in almost 900 episodes. Rainsford joined in 2014 and departed nine years later. The return of the original music, used from the show's 1980s debut until 2001, particularly delighted fans.
