Charlie Smyth, from County Down, is embarking on his first pre-season as a starting kicker for the New Orleans Saints. Having joined the team for his third training camp, Smyth states he no longer feels like a novice.
Smyth's opportunity arose last November when he took over from Blake Grupe in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins. Following this, he signed a three-year contract in December. During the final six games of the Saints' season, Smyth successfully converted 12 of 16 field goal attempts and all 13 extra-point attempts.
The increased visibility of being an NFL starter, including featuring in fantasy football discussions and the Madden computer game, is something Smyth is adjusting to. He also spent time in the off-season with golfer Shane Lowry, discussing similarities between kicking and golf.
This pre-season brings a new challenge for Smyth, as the Saints have brought in Tanner Brown, a UFL championship winner, to compete for the starting spot. Smyth acknowledges this as part of the business and intends to focus on his performance.
