Scottish singer and Broadway performer Lena Martell has died at the age of 86. Born Helen Thomson in Glasgow, Martell was known for her chart-topping single and her BBC television show.
Martell became the first solo Scottish female singer to top the UK singles chart with her cover of 'One Day at a Time' in 1979. The single sold nearly three million copies and remained in the charts for 36 weeks.
In the 1970s, Martell hosted her own BBC prime time television show for about a decade, which attracted weekly audiences of over 12 million. She also performed internationally in New York and Las Vegas alongside stars such as Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand.
Throughout her life, Martell faced health challenges, including a cancer diagnosis and a triple heart bypass. She continued to perform after her recovery, including at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow. She is understood to have died at a care home.
