A new film, 'The Social Reckoning', which serves as a stand-alone sequel to 2010's 'The Social Network', is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on October 9. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the original film, takes on directing duties for this new production.
The film is inspired by events that led to the 2021 Facebook Files reports by Wall Street Journal writer Jeff Horwitz. Jeremy Strong portrays Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg, taking over the role from Jesse Eisenberg. Mikey Madison stars as Frances Haugen, a Facebook employee who uncovers a link between social media algorithms and the rise of right-wing groups.
The narrative follows Haugen as she brings her findings to journalist Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, while Zuckerberg prepares for a US government investigation. The film explores the dangers of social media, particularly in a sequence depicting Zuckerberg observing the January 6 riots.
Wunmi Mosaku and Bill Burr also feature, attempting to appeal to Zuckerberg's humanity. Strong's portrayal of Zuckerberg is highlighted as a key performance, depicting him as a powerful figure unaccustomed to being questioned.
