Broadcaster Adrian Chiles has revealed his fascination with British place names, attributing human-like personas to various villages and towns across the UK. His imaginative exercise began while he was stuck in traffic in Chippenham, Wiltshire, where a road sign to Christian Malford and Sutton Benger sparked his creativity.
Chiles envisioned Christian Malford as a child actor from the early Harry Potter films, and Sutton Benger as a precociously talented Anglo-Norwegian footballer who signed for Chelsea but did not succeed. He continued this mental game while passing Leigh Delamere on the M4, imagining her as a glamorous heiress.
Back home, Chiles delved into his late father’s 2019 AA road atlas, searching for more place names that could be people. He noted mononymous examples like Patrick on the Isle of Man and Paul in Cornwall. More complex names also inspired him, such as Clifford Chambers in Warwickshire, which he imagined as a lawyer, and Bentley Pauncefoot in Worcestershire, envisioned as the friendly but clueless youngest son of a noble family.
In the realm of sport, Chiles identified Buckinghamshire as a strong contender, imagining Aston Clinton as a feared West Indian fast bowler and Lee Clump as a footballer holding several non-league scoring records.
