OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT Health is now integrated with Epic's electronic health record (EHR) system. This integration allows clinicians to import patient data and use AI to ask questions, with Epic's system holding data for over 325 million patients.
Clinicians can access information such as appointment notes, laboratory results, medications, and specialist documentation to summarise them. They can also review patient history, identify changes, and prepare for future appointments. OpenAI stated that in some deployments, ChatGPT can be accessed directly within EHR workflows for pre-visit reviews and building clinical timelines without leaving a patient chart. The company clarified that this integration provides read-only access to health records, and the AI does not write back to the system.
Additionally, OpenAI is introducing a new Healthcare Public Data plugin. This plugin can retrieve information from sources including ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed, assisting healthcare workers in synthesising data for various criteria.
OpenAI also confirmed that organisations with a Business Associate Agreement can use ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, and connectors in their workspace for compliant workflows. The company maintains that AI is not suitable for diagnosis or treatment, despite its deep integrations with medical systems.
