Chelsea Football Club is reportedly set to be valued at around £5bn as Todd Boehly and Mark Walter prepare to sell their stakes. This potential valuation would represent a doubling of the £2.5bn paid by the Boehly and Clearlake consortium to acquire the London club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Despite Chelsea finishing in the Premier League's top four only once in four seasons under American ownership and incurring aggregate operating losses approaching £500m, the club's value has surged. This valuation includes the ownership of sister club Strasbourg, part of the BlueCo network, and aligns with a general increase in the valuations of top-tier sports teams.
The exit of long-time business partners Boehly and Walter will see Clearlake strengthen its majority shareholding in BlueCo to more than 85 per cent. A spokesperson for Walter stated that this potential transaction values his stake at a premium to his initial investment, calling it another successful sports investment for him.
