Ciutadella de Menorca is being highlighted as an uncrowded Spanish city that rivals San Sebastian for food, with Michelin-listed restaurants and a strong tradition of kilometre-zero gastronomy.
Three of its restaurants – Smoix, Godai and Aquiara – feature in the Michelin Guide, alongside Ca Na Pilar, Torralbenc, Santa Mariana and Es Cranc in the surrounding area. The city also participates in Menorca's Custòdia Agrària land stewardship scheme, which works with local farms to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture and livestock farming and helps connect participating producers with markets, shops and businesses across the island.
Aquarium restaurant sources much of its seafood from fishermen in Ciutadella and adopts a nose-to-tail approach, using almost everything that arrives. Its red tuna japo taco won first prize for Spain's best bluefin tuna tapa at the national GourmeTapa competition in 2023.
Other dining options include Fang i Aram, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant near the sea, and Katú de Smoix, a Mexican-Mediterranean fusion restaurant set up by Smoix's chef.
