Clubs compensated by Fifa for player injuries on international duty

Football clubs can receive financial compensation from Fifa if their players are injured while on international duty, provided certain conditions are met.

  • Fifa's Club Protection Programme compensates clubs for new injuries sustained by players on international duty.
  • Compensation is paid if an injury prevents a player from full training or matches for a minimum of 28 days.
  • The maximum compensation is 7.5 million euros, paid at a daily rate of 20,548 euros for up to 365 days.

Football's world governing body, Fifa, provides financial compensation to clubs whose players sustain injuries while representing their national teams. This compensation is part of the Fifa Club Protection Programme.

For a club to be eligible, a player must suffer a new injury during international duty that prevents them from participating in full training or matches for at least 28 continuous days. The compensation covers a player's salary, excluding bonuses and one-off payments, and is paid directly to the club.

The programme offers a maximum compensation of 7.5 million euros, calculated at a daily pro-rata rate of 20,548 euros. This can cover up to 365 days for a single injury. Compensation ceases if the player returns to full training, their contract expires, or the maximum amount is reached.

Several Premier League players, including Bruno Fernandes, Cody Gakpo, and Kai Havertz, along with Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe, have reportedly sustained injuries during the recent extended September/October international break.
