The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened an investigation into Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited, trading as Microsoft, over suspected infringements of consumer protection law. The probe, launched on 27 July 2026, focuses on how information was presented to customers regarding changes to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions.
The CMA is concerned that customers may not have received clear upfront information about subscription options when changes were made, including the addition of new features like Copilot. The investigation will examine whether Microsoft's communications before renewal were misleading and if customers were given key information about plan differences and costs to help them make informed decisions.
At this initial stage, the CMA has not made any finding of infringement and it should not be assumed that Microsoft has infringed consumer protection law. The authority will now gather and analyse further evidence as part of its investigation.
