The Coalition's primary vote has reached its lowest-ever point in the Guardian Essential poll, sinking to 22% in September. This represents a four-point decrease since August, when it stood at 26%.
Despite increasing scrutiny of the Labor government, the opposition has not gained ground. Labor's primary vote rose from 26% in August to 29% in September.
The poll, which surveyed 1,022 people last week, also indicates that 55% of Australians desire a reduction in the annual migrant intake. There is majority support for measures such as forced deportations for visa overstayers (70% support) and greater scrutiny of protection or asylum visas (68%).
One Nation's primary vote increased to 25% in this month's poll, up from 23% in August. The Greens maintained a primary vote of 12%.
