Comedian Jimmy Cricket, whose real name was James Joseph Mulgrew, has died at the age of 80. Mulgrew, originally from Cookstown in Northern Ireland, adopted his stage name while working as an entertainer at Butlin's and Pontins holiday camps from the 1960s.
He was widely known for his catchphrase, “And there’s more!”, which also became the title of his ITV show that ran from 1985-88. His stage persona included wearing too-short formal trousers, funny hats, and Wellingtons on the wrong foot.
Mulgrew was a committed churchgoer and a clean comic, known for his family-friendly material with no smut or swearing. In 2015, he received a papal knighthood, Catholicism’s highest honour, from Pope Francis, in recognition of his charitable work.
