Comedian Sarah Roberts has revealed that the 1995 film adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s "A Little Princess" significantly influenced her path to a career in standup comedy. Roberts, who first watched the film at eight years old, stated she was inspired by the protagonist, Sara, and her ability to create her own reality.
Roberts, who was 28 when she first performed standup, decided to quit her job the day after winning an open-mic competition. She credits the film with helping her develop the "delusional self-belief" she believes is essential for comedians, particularly when facing setbacks.
Roberts has been performing standup consistently for five years. She noted that the longer she performs, the more she embraces failure, viewing it as necessary for improvement. She now sees Sara, the film's protagonist, not just as a fantasist but as a standup comedian.
Sarah Roberts' show, "Scary Movie 7," is currently playing at the Monkey Barrel 2 in Edinburgh until 30 August.
