Contraceptive coil helped reveal woman's stage three ovarian cancer

Caroline Bailey, 54, was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in June 2023 after severe abdominal pain led to scans revealing a tumour pressing against her contraceptive coil. She is now free of disease after treatment.

  • Caroline Bailey experienced severe abdominal pain, initially believing it was caused by her contraceptive coil.
  • Scans revealed a 13cm tumour pressing against her coil, leading to a diagnosis of stage three ovarian cancer.
  • After chemotherapy and surgery, Caroline Bailey currently has no evidence of disease.

A woman's contraceptive coil helped to reveal her stage three ovarian cancer after she experienced severe abdominal pain. Caroline Bailey, 54, initially thought her coil was causing the sharp, stabbing pains in her stomach and sought its removal.

Scans subsequently revealed a 13cm (5in) tumour pressing against her coil. She was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in June 2023 and has since undergone chemotherapy and surgery.

Caroline Bailey, from Trelogan, Flintshire, now has no evidence of disease. She said, "I absolutely think that the coil saved my life, which is mad."

Ovarian cancer is the 16th most common cancer, with approximately 7,700 new cases annually, according to Cancer Research UK.
