A coroner investigating deaths linked to the jailed breast surgeon Ian Paterson has appealed for the families of 106 additional patients to come forward. Inquests are currently being held into the deaths of 70 women to determine if Paterson's treatment or care led to an unnatural death.
Judge Richard Foster, the coroner for the inquests, stated he was recently informed of the deaths of 106 more patients who were treated by Paterson for breast cancer. However, he has not been provided with their medical cause of death. A list of these 106 names, which includes six men, is available on the investigation website, asking next of kin to contact Higgs LLP, the solicitors to the inquests.
Higgs LLP told the BBC they are seeking cause of death information to assess whether these former patients' deaths will be investigated. Paterson was convicted in 2017 of wounding patients through botched and unnecessary operations and received a 20-year prison sentence. He is due for automatic release halfway through his sentence in 2027, before the Birmingham inquests are scheduled to conclude.
