A Corsican photographer, known by the initials ASA, has been recognised by the ASA for capturing the 'Best Phone Picture'. The winning image, taken in the photographer's hometown of Bastia, on the French island of Corsica, showcases a compelling silhouette of a young woman.
The photograph was captured in 2018, during the peak of summer. ASA commented on the conditions: “when the sun was at its strongest. I like working when the light is very strong and the facades are burned by the sun.” This strong light created the sharp shadows that define the award-winning image.
ASA has previously discussed how anonymity has been a significant aspect of their photographic work since they first began. This approach allows the focus to remain on the visual narrative rather than the identity of the photographer or, in this instance, the subject.
