Coventry City Return to Premier League After 25 Years

Coventry City are back in the Premier League after a 25-year absence, having secured promotion by winning the Championship last season under manager Frank Lampard.

  • Coventry City won the Championship last season, securing their return to the Premier League after 25 years.
  • Frank Lampard, who took charge in November 2024, has signed fresh terms until 2029.
  • The club-record signing of Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi for £23m is a key addition to the squad.

Coventry City are set to kick off their Premier League season, marking their return to the top flight after a 25-year absence. The club secured promotion by winning the Championship last season, finishing 1st.

Under manager Frank Lampard, who took the helm in November 2024, the team will face champions Arsenal in their opening fixture. Lampard, who signed new terms until 2029, described the promotion as the proudest moment of his managerial career.

The squad has been bolstered by the club-record £23m arrival of Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi from FC Nordsjælland. Additionally, goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has signed permanently after a successful loan spell, having claimed the Championship golden glove with 17 clean sheets last season.

Coventry were the highest scorers across English football's top four tiers last season with 97 goals. They also led the Championship in set-piece goals, with 29.

Why this matters: Coventry City's return to the Premier League after a quarter-century absence marks a significant moment for the club and its supporters, following periods of homelessness and time in the fourth tier.
