Eriskay ponies, a critically endangered native breed, continue to face challenges in the Outer Hebrides. Only an estimated 300 to 400 true Eriskay ponies are thought to remain, making them one of the rarest native breeds globally. Their numbers were previously thought to be higher due to interbreeding with Highland ponies and other breeds.
Efforts to increase their population have been ongoing since the 1970s on Eriskay Island and the mainland. The ponies on Eriskay roam freely for half the year, including winter, and are cared for by the island's community. Each pony has an owner, even though they appear similar to an average observer.
Comann Each nan Eilean, the island's pony society founded in 1972, is developing a breeding programme and manages herd numbers to ensure the grazing land can sustain the animals. The community also notes that recent winters have been longer and wetter, affecting the ponies and requiring more community assistance with feeding. One foal was born on the island this year, with hopes for more next year.
