Cyber-attacks hit supermarkets across nine European countries

A spate of cyber-attacks has affected supermarket chains in at least nine European countries, prompting concerns about the disruption to food supplies.

  • Supermarkets in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden have reported problems
  • Temperatures in some freezers rose as high as 50C (122F)
  • The European Union has raised concerns about the attacks

A spate of cyber-attacks that hit supermarket chains across at least nine European countries on Monday has prompted European Union officials to warn of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain.

Supermarkets have reported problems in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden, and the significant increase in freezer temperatures has forced retailers to discard food.

Why this matters: The attacks highlight concerns about the security of refrigeration systems and other devices that can be monitored remotely.

What this means for you: If you shop at a supermarket, be aware that your local store may have been affected by the cyber-attack, and food supplies may be disrupted.
