Dallaglio's World Cup Medal Sells for £54,000 at Budds Auction

Former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio's 2003 World Cup winner's medal fetched £54,000 at a recent Budds auction, as sporting memorabilia continues to command high prices.

  • Lawrence Dallaglio's 2003 World Cup winner's medal sold for £54,000.
  • A jersey worn by Michael Jordan in the 1998 NBA finals recently sold for over £10m.
  • The oldest surviving FA Cup and Pelé’s 1970 World Cup final shirt have previously secured world-record prices.

A 2003 World Cup winner's medal belonging to former England rugby union captain Lawrence Dallaglio was sold for £54,000 at Budds auction house's "Octoberfest" event. The medal was a key item from Dallaglio's collection, which also included a set of tankards that sold for £1,600 and his England and Lions caps.

The sale highlights the booming market for sporting memorabilia. Recently, a jersey worn by Michael Jordan during the second game of the 1998 NBA finals sold for over £10m, following another of his jerseys from game three selling for £9.3m two weeks prior. The jersey worn by Babe Ruth in the 1932 World Series remains the most expensive item of sports memorabilia ever, having sold for over £18m in 2024.

Auctioneer David Convery, who has three decades of experience, has previously secured world-record prices for items such as the oldest surviving FA Cup and Pelé’s 1970 World Cup final shirt. The Budds auction featured 332 lots, including a Barclays Manager of the Month trophy that sold for £700, and Eric Cantona's shorts.

Why this matters: The high prices for sporting memorabilia reflect a growing trend in the market, where iconic items are increasingly seen as valuable assets.
