Former broadcaster Dame Jenni Murray died from complications of injuries suffered in a car crash, a coroner has ruled. The 75-year-old was "dazzled by vehicle lights" and collided with two stationary vehicles, an inquest at Barnet Coroner’s Court was told on Thursday.
Dame Jenni died on 12 March, eight days after the crash in north London on 4 March. North London area coroner Tony Murphy determined her cause of death was bronchopneumonia brought on by rib and sternum fractures sustained during the accident.
The collision, which occurred on Wildwood Road around 7:44pm, caused multiple rib fractures, a fracture to her upper sternum, and a collapsed lung. She was taken to hospital and later moved to intensive care, where she developed bronchopneumonia. A decision was made to focus on palliative care after her condition deteriorated on 10 March.
The Metropolitan Police investigated the crash but closed its investigation with no further action. Dame Jenni was known for presenting Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4 for three decades until 2020.
