Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from the China Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic on Monday after hitting a spectator in the face with a ball. The incident occurred when Djokovic was serving for a place in the final, and Medvedev swiped a ricocheted ball into the stands.
Rules state that a player can be barred for "hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly, or with negligent disregard of the consequences." Medvedev will forfeit all prize money and ranking points earned from his semi-final run in Beijing. He remains in the eighth qualifying spot for November's ATP Finals, but the loss of 200 points could be significant.
The 30-year-old has apologised for his actions and expressed a desire to apologise to the spectator in person. Medvedev has a history of on-court temper, including being fined over £60,000 for his behaviour at the 2025 Australian Open and an incident at Wimbledon in 2017 where he sprinkled coins at an umpire's feet.
