The Danish government has announced new measures to combat AI cheating in upper secondary schools, which will come into immediate effect as pupils return to school next week. Students aged 16 to 19 will now be required to make an oral defence of their written essays.
Education Minister Magnus Heunicke stated that urgent action was needed due to a problem with AI cheating. The education ministry hopes these measures will establish clearer guidelines regarding the use of AI by pupils.
Upper secondary schools will also be required to use monitoring tools during written exams to oversee computer usage and install firewalls to filter network access. Schools are also being encouraged to have pupils complete more written assignments under controlled conditions at school.
The government is preparing a comprehensive national strategy for AI use across all schools and the wider education sector. Heunicke plans to engage with schools, teachers, and students to ensure AI does not undermine student competencies.
