A "social supermarket" in Dartford, Kent, has reported 600 sign-ups in its first year of operation. The Dartford Larder, which opened in July 2025, offers low-cost groceries and budgeting advice.
Operating on a subscription model, members pay £4.50 each week to access essential items, including unlimited fruit and vegetables. The facility, located on Copperfields Walk, is a joint effort by Crossways Community Church, the Healthy Living Centre, and Dartford Borough Council.
Pastor Stephen Brindley of Crossways Community Church stated that the project aimed to restore dignity to people. He noted that the subscription system was welcomed by users, who felt they were "giving something in return for what they were getting." According to Brindley, the supermarket has distributed over 75,000 items since its opening.
